PHOENIX — Starting Tuesday, January 19th, Phoenix homeowners will be able to schedule a pickup time to have someone come to their house to dispose of hazardous materials, such as pool chemicals, paint thinner, aerosols, remotes, and batteries.
It is part of a six-month pilot program the City of Phoenix is testing. Before, people would have to drop items up at a central location.
COVID-19 is a reason for the program, according to Lucas Mariacher, who works for Phoenix’s Public Works Department.
“With everything that’s going on with the pandemic, we re-evaluated how we wanted to offer the program,” he said.
Other cities have similar programs, including Scottsdale, Peoria, and Glendale where residents can schedule a home pickup, said Mariacher.
The goal is to make the service convenient for residents and ultimately keeping these hazardous materials out of the environment.
“These materials we definitely do not want in the environment. We do not want them in the storm drains. We want to make sure they’re captured and properly disposed of,” he said.
Currently, the program is scheduled to run through the end of June. The hope is to keep the program up and running long-term.
